entrepreneurship

society’s recipe doesn’t work for everyone

by Emily Leach in entrepreneurship

society has created and sold us all a recipe for success: go to school, go to college, you will get a great J-O-B and then in 30 years you can be free … i call bullshit on this recipe!

has this recipe worked for you?   i haven’t met many in my 40+ years on this planet (although there are a few), but i sure have met a ton of people working really hard to make it work.  even the older generation that was able to make this recipe work have found that by the time they get to the freedom part of the recipe their bodies are starting to have more problems than will allow them to play with all their new free time.

entrepreneurship doesn’t guarantee freedom either, but it can create a free-er lifestyle where you can travel, play and enjoy life while you are still young.  fact is there are more millionaires on the planet now than there ever has been due to the increase in the entrepreneurial spirit going out, taking a chance and hitting it big.

13 years of an american child’s life is spent teaching consumerism and conformity, it’s time to change that in our education system.  if you have the gift of a free spirit and an open mind share with a child, go speak to high school or jr. high programs and show them opportunity options, what if we created programs within our small companies that allowed students to help out and experience entrepreneurship in action (the good and stressful sides)?

schools probably aren’t going to change, especially not quick enough to show our current students that not all of them are going to fit in to the J-O-B mold and that it is ok … they will have an amazing future ahead of them!

Society’s recipe didn’t work for me, either. I graduated from college with a 4.0 expecting that I was going to be a great success. Ha. After six years, being fired twice, and just plain not fitting in at other jobs, I decided to go the entrepreneurial route. It has its ups and downs, but this is definitely the right path for me!

Great to hear, this seems to be a pretty typical route for us. The silver lining is that we do learn some skills from each of those J-O-B’s as well as a lot about ourselves!

I don’t seem to be able to fit into a JOB either. I get bored and feel my life is being sucked out of me and wasted.
But, I’ve had three businesses now and all have lasted a year or under. I just can’t seem to keep motivated and wanting to do the same thing for too long. I like what I’ve done, I get excited about preparing and I’m full of ideas but then I lose steam and can’t imagine doing the same thing everyday, I think ‘okay I did that, what else can I do?’.
Makes some trouble trying to be a fit mother and wife.
Seems entrepreneurship isn’t working for me either. So, I’m kinda lost.
    Thanks for your posts.

Been there, it sounds like you have not yet found your “thing”. It took me many years, but even though I was rather lost a lot freelancing allowed me to be a single stay-at-home mom when my son needed it. Now I’ve finally found my path, or purpose and can see how all my years of searching was needed to get here and be the person life molded me to be. Keep your head up, don’t give up … keep looking.
