i moved to albuquerque new mexico from detroit michigan in the spring of 2010. my friend worked for the new mexico partnership, an economic development firm that brings companies and jobs to the state. michigan had an unemployment rate of 18% new mexico was 8%. after spending 5 months looking for design work, talking to ad agencies and people – i had made some excellent contacts, found consulting work – but full time work eluded me. i observed like detroit – the clothing companies here in albuquerque were all selling the same ‘gangsta’ or ‘albuquerque’ clothing with sparkles to tourist.

i was asked why i chose to start a business over 26 years ago. it had been a long time since anyone posed that question. as i reflected backed, i realized that since i was a child i had grown up around great uncles that had owned their own businesses. during the summers when we went to visit my grandparents, i spent time working with them in each of their different business ventures. my grandfathers had started businesses when they were younger before they went on to their chosen jobs.
